Institute: A place dedicated to research work and education (as in: not dedicated to making profit); a resource centre for interested scientist, scholars and students. The IEZ is a private and independent institute. We collaborate with several institutions. More details on our staff and projects Ethnobotany: The study of the relations between the people and the plants that are in their environment. Plants can have ritual, symbolic, economic or medicinal value for people. People can have supportive or destructive effects on plants. Mostly the meaning is narrowed to: study of indigenous (traditional) medicinal plant use by anthropologists and botanists. The IEZ studies local (Dutch) herbal, naturopath and folk healing traditions. More about ethnobotany Ethnoveterinary: Concerns local knowledge and its associated skills, practices, beliefs, practitioners and social structures pertaining to the healthcare and healthful husbandry of animals. IEZ made an overview of herbs used by Dutch farmers and pet owners to heal or preserve the health of their animals. More details Zoopharmacognosy: The study of the spontaneous medicinal use by animals of items (mostly plants) of their environment. Interdisciplinary field of research between pharmacognosy (the part of pharmacy that studies medicinal plants) and ethology/ecology. The IEZ studied for example the spontaneous consumption of medicinal herbs and other plants by monkeys in a Dutch and French Zoo. See some of this work
